ERRC Lifeguards assist 3 with spinal injuries after jumping off Comino rocksLifeguards of Gozo’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps assisted various swimmers during that weekend at the Blue Lagoon in Comino and Ramla Bay in Gozo.

Last Friday, at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, lifeguards assisted two swimmers who suffered from spinal injuries after jumping. The first accident, which happened at around 3.00pm, involved a woman who suffered from back pain after jumping from a rock near Cominotto, known as ‘il-gwardja.’ The second accident happened at around 5.00pm, involving a man who jumped off Cominotto.

In both cases, ERRC lifeguards assisted the swimmers with the appropriate first aid procedure before transporting the swimmers to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo with the hydro ambulance Lifesaver 1. An ambulance then transferred them to the Gozo General Hospital for further treatment.

On Sunday, another spinal injury was reported in Comino. This time involving a 23-year-old Maltese man who was treated for spinal injury after jumping off Comino. He was transported to Mgarr Harbour with Lifesaver 1, and again transferred by ambulance to the Gozo General Hospital

Then at around 2.00pm, a paddle boat was unable to return ashore due to strong currents at Ramla Bay in Gozo. Rescue boat Lifesaver 2 was deployed and towed it to safety ashore on the beach. Its occupants were given the appropriate first aid.

Support is also being provided by the Ministry for Gozo, Mgarr Marina, Transport Malta, Police, Armed Forces of Malta, Police and the Civil Protection Department.

      Maybe it’s an age thing but I just can’t understand what enjoyment anyone gets from jumping off a rock into the water. One look at someone in a wheelchair for life should be enough to put anyone off this stupid practice. Anyone being injured doing this should be made to pay for their rescue and medical treatment.
