On the occasion of the canonisation of John Paul II, the Gozo Creative Theatre Club will perform The Jeweller’s Shop (subtitles “A Meditation on the Sacrament of Matrimony, Passing on Occasion into Drama”) by Karol Wojtyia (Pope John Paul II).

This one act play, translated from the Polish language by Boleslaw Taborski, explores relationships between men and women, the joys and pain of love and marriage.

Karol Wojtyia has long been involved with the theatre. As a student of literature, then priest, bishop and archbishop, he acted, directed, wrote dramatic criticism, made a Polish translation of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, and has authored six plays.

The Jeweller’s Shop is the only English translation authorised by the Vatican. This play looks at humanity’s ideas and expectations of romantic love and marriage. It is a truthful and animated look at the way people are when in love and their motivations for entering into couplehood.

Overall it provides a special insight into the thoughts of the man who, like no other, has captured the imagination of people of all faiths throughout the world.

The Jeweller’s Shop will be directed by George Mizzi, the artistic director of the group, along with a superb cast including Mariella Cassar, Mariella Falzon Gannon, George Camilleri, Charlene Galea, Jamie Camilleri, Marisa Galea, Mark Lawrence Zammit, Sharona Refalo, Andy Fava and Sandra Grech.

The Jeweller’s Shop will be performed in collaboration with Wirt Ghawdex at the Santa Cecilia Medieval Chapel, Lambert Street, Ghajnsielem, Gozo on Friday, the 2nd and Saturday, the 3rd of May, at 8.00pm, as well as on Sunday, the 4th of May, at 7.00pm.

Entrance is free of charge and the seating will be on a first come first served basis.
