Celebration for 50 Years of Independence: The Greatest Spectacle EverTo celebrate Malta’s 50th Anniversary of Independence, the Fondazzjoni Celebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali will be staging a multimedia spectacle in the Grand Harbour, Valletta involving a wide range of activities, attractions and art in most of its forms.

The spectacle will include an aerial display by four planes doing pyrotechnics, a helicopter display, various dance performances, video projections on the bastions, a light show, performances of different genres of music, a display involving Maltese dghajjes tal-pass, a poetry reading and, of course, amazing fireworks.

The spectacle is designed to bring together the various activities and artistic performances taking place in various parts of the Grand Harbour together in real time. Through audiovisual technology and projections on the screens and the bastions the audience will be able to see certain activities live but which are synchronised with others taking place somewhere else and projected.

FCN Board member Lou Bondi, explained hat unlike previous times the artistic team behind this event is Maltese.

Board member Jason Busuttil added that it was the Prime Minister’s wish to have the biggest spectacle this island has yet seen, to commemorate this anniversary and that is exactly what is planned, as it will involve 14 different local firework factories as well as the award winning Italian Pyroemotions.

Superintendent Stephen Mallia, on behalf of the Malta Police said that some roads leading to Valletta will be closed and he encouraged the general public to use Park & Ride as well as Public Transport.

Owen Bonnici, Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government said that “Together we are writing history,” as for first time our main political figures are coming together to celebrate this milestone.

He continued by saying that we cannot celebrate this anniversary without remembering our political forefathers – George Borg Olivier; the father of Independence, Dom Mintoff; who fought for many civil liberties and Eddie Fenech Adami who built a new Malta after Independence.

The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William will be in attendance at the Upper Barrakka.

The President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader will deliver their messages about the 50th Anniversary of Independence.

To round off the evening, at Ta’ Liesse there will be a live concert featuring Malta’s best singers and musicians.

The spectacle starts with the aeronautical display at 19.20pm over the Grand Harbour, Valletta.
